Why Philosophy to Insights
So we agreed with what Mr. Socrates had said and Philosophy indeed was and is 'thinking that invites enquiry', that which allows for queries to be explored and for the mind to flourish.
This agreement did not come easy, it came after hours of reading and re-reading of a paper on Why Philosophy by Robert Fischer!
Having had the 'block party', it was easier to get on with an expansive write-up like this one. It threw light on matters of thinking, why it must be taught and what constitutes a good thinker. It spoke of thinking as intrinsic to human development and how a 'thinking' society makes for a 'successful society'.
Speaking of societies, one can't stay far away from matters of 'citizenship', concepts of 'democracy' or 'entitlements' and therefore generating a 'shared understanding' of what is an 'appropriate/ right judgement'.towards solving problems as a community.
While we were reading the paper, we made use of expressive tools (hmm...., huh!, what? etc) as ways to identify and segregate the content.
it proved to be a revelation because it made skimming through the paper easier and helped to dwell on what seemed important/ relevant to the reader in question.
Hence interestingly, each of our sheets had marks in different parts of the paper, making the interpretation of the content unique to the reader.
Some interesting/important things came out of this reading and I will put down 3 of them, before moving to the one complex sentence that was generated by the end of this exercise.
On reading about the transition from Back to Basics & Forward to Basics
? Why the tussle between B to B & F to B
Why is it such a dichotomy
Why can't both co-exist
On reading about skills and how they do not say much and may not be an indicator for character, needs or values
? Don't our values indicate our choices as humans
For artisans, their skills and value systems overlap
What constitutes 'skill' in different contexts
! Extending the self and deepening the understanding of self, without becoming self- centered.
(reminded me of HHDL's quote 'be intelligent selfish')
There were many more hmm, huh! moments, but I will refrain from putting them all down and get straight down to the single complex sentence that was to be derived from this reading and in my case is a question that I am asking:
? In this era of immediate gratification, what is the natre of right intellectual stimuli that does the following:
- sustains curiosity with optimism
- is value-centric (the centre being the self and community)
- is driven by humility
- makes one challenge ready and prepares one for the emerging world
